LegalTech Soapbox - Tessaract.io

Our LegalTech Soapbox series is where we put the spotlight on #LegalTech vendors that are benefiting the legal fraternity and the broader network with their game-changing Legal Technology.

Under the spotlight in episode 8 is Tessaract.io. We speak to CEO, Cherilyn Tan, about all things Tessaract.io! Let's dive in...

1. Hi Cherilyn, tell us the story behind Tessaract.io!

Tessaract Technologies was set up to accelerate the digitalisation of the professional services industry as a whole. Whilst we serve the legal industry with asialawnetwork.com launched in 2015, we realised that there was a bigger problem that we had to solve before lawyers can be more effective taking in more clients and making full use of their every waking hour. We empathise with the fact that the lawyers' jobs are not easy, piled on with the fact that the technologies available to run their entire back office is clunky, outdated and more expensive that the comparable solutions that serve other industries.

We decided to build on top of what we already knew about the legal firms we serve and expanded our solution to be a low-code, no-code workflow automation platform that allows each and every firm to customise to their own workflows and needs.

2. What are the services/products that Tessaract.io provides?

In the legal industry, you'll find us being labelled as a Practice Management, Document Management, Document Digital Signing, and full Accounting software. However, we do a lot more than that. Currently our technology stack is fully cloud-native, and comprises of tasks automation, notifications automation, custom form and report builders, report visualisation and links to various external cloud-native software/services easily. What might be useful to know is that we can deploy in any cloud environment that the law firm desires, and data can reside in a private cloud environment.

3. How does it help optimise the daily operations of a legal team?

We optimise every part of the operations journey from:

  • External facing activities
    • Conflict check, customised client intake which often is a straight-through workflow together with digital signing,
    • Creation of tasks within teams in various departments,
    • Creation of standard documents within seconds for each matter and job,
    • Approval workflows for expense related items to billing,
    • Notifications to clients and staff for related tasks, and activities to follow up on
  • Internal operational activities
    • Tagging and syncing emails related to a particular matter and job
    • Creating compliance workflows for ISO and other internal compliance requirements for HR
    • Optimising data and knowledge management through a variety of workflows and tools such as OCR and access control
    • Dashboarding and visualising reports, data across the entire data stream of the firm

4. What do you believe will be the most significant change in how legal teams use technology in the next 10 years?

The most significant change will come in the form of a changing mindset.

Legal teams will start to realise the power of how technology can augment their time spent on unnecessary administrative tasks, which dramatically increases their team's billable output (not time), with the same 24 hours they have. With that mindset switched on, even really small teams will be able to bill with increased profitability if they learn to adopt the right technologies and hire the right people to run their operations. With enough knowledge about technology, legal teams can also harness the power of a strong backend, to be able to test new products in the market using current technology and keep up with their clients.
