LegalTech Soapbox: Actionstep.

Our LegalTech Soapbox series is where we put the spotlight on #LegalTech vendors that are benefiting the legal fraternity and the broader network with their game-changing Legal Technology.
Under the spotlight in episode 10 is Actionstep, a practice management system. We speak to Regional Director, UK, Oliver Tromp , who shares the story behind Actionstep. Let's dive in...
1. Hi Oliver, tell us the story behind Actionstep.
Ted Jordan founded Actionstep in New Zealand after spending 15 years running software companies in the United States. He realised that traditionally, a specific workflow was built into these companies’ software, and if the workflow changed, they were stuck with the same old software processes. With Actionstep, Ted removed the workflow from the software and allowed clients to modify it to their needs without having to write any code. This workflow flexibility was embraced by businesses with a strong focus on compliance and process, which is why Actionstep is a now solution specifically for law firms and other legal services providers. Today we are a fast-growing SaaS business with a global team and customer base.
2. What are the services or products that Actionstep provides?
Actionstep is the premier legal practice management system for modern law firms. Because Actionstep is 100% cloud-based and has an open API, it integrates with many of the most advanced cloud-based legal tech platforms in the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand, and its library of integrations is always growing. Actionstep’s comprehensive platform offers case management, timekeeping, workflows, billing, document and email management, client accounting, office and business accounting, and more, in one powerful, customisable, and beautiful platform. In a nutshell, our software saves lawyers time and money so they can focus on what they do best: helping businesses and people thrive.
3. How does the above optimise the daily operations of an in-house legal team/law firm?
Actionstep reduces time spent on administrative tasks by automating workflows and simplifying processes. Rather than shifting between separate systems for things like document management, case management, and accounting, everything in Actionstep is done in one system. Our workflow automation technology establishes a customised series of tasks that can run independently of manual intervention, freeing up your staff’s time and reducing human error. This automation also creates consistency—it won’t skip a step, break a rule, or copy down a name incorrectly. This all ladders up to client experience, which is made up of hundreds of touchpoints that all intersect with your firm’s workflow. Beginning with the first response a client receives after submitting an inquiry all the way to billing, Actionstep connects all these touchpoints in one place, ensuring the processes work together and your firm’s client experience feels seamless.
4. What do you believe will be the most significant change in how legal teams use technology in the next 10 years?
The pandemic has done more to accelerate the digitisation of law than any one thing could have in two years. This momentum will carry for the next 10 years, causing more legal teams to explore advanced technologies to optimise their processes. Since few of the incumbent practice management systems have open APIs, many legal teams will switch practice management providers in an effort to find a platform flexible enough to integrate with their preferred technology stack and powerful enough to optimise their operations.
